Wine Selection:

King River Estate

- King Valley, Victoria

Biodynamics at work

The Knaggs family have lived in the King Valley for three generations.  Originally a sheep farm, the property was transformed into a Wine Estate by Trevor Knaggs in 1990.  Wine quality has improved to impressive levels as he has applied biodynamic practices and started to use wild yeasts.  What this means is you can taste the terroir and the seasonal influence in every drop.  These are the extreme opposite of “factory” wines.  You get character and personality delivered faithfully and in perfect harmony through meticulous winemaking.  The wines we have chosen from the range have all been rated from 91-94 points.  Everyone a bargain – even the more expensive RESERVE Merlot – we think one of Australia's best 100% Merlot.

King River Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2008
This is reminiscent of a French Pouilly Fume or a Sancerre. It is more about subtelty and elegance than "in your face" Kiwi Sav.  Beautifully balanced minerally palate with an incredibly linear long finish.  Sensational value!  93 points Philip White.

King River Estate Vermentino 2008
This is a gorgeous Vermentino (a white wine most common in Sardinia, Italy).  There are Asian tropical fruits intertwined with tannin and acidity that combine to create a well balanced wine with a delightful, exciting long palate.  So well made!  Philip White 93 points!

King River Estate Merlot 2005 - King Valley, Vic

" King Valley is emerging as one of Victoria's prime cool climate regions. This Merlot is brimming with mulberry and bramble notes, and its fresh and full of fruit in the mouth . Serve with quail." Sally Gudgeon - The Sunday Age / Sydney morning Herald

King River Estate RESERVE Merlot 2005 - King Valley, Vic

94+++ points    This stunning example has a whole chocolate creme caramel quivering within its encircling earthy greens. It's elegant, but has great authority and weight;it's complex, but is already harmonising,if a tad reluctantly.  Given a decade of dungeon, it'll be a truly incredible, opulent, tantalising King among wines.  Philip White Novermber 2008

King River Estate Barbera 2005 - King Valley, Vic
This Barbera is helping build the reputation of the King Valley as a centre of excellence for Italian varieties.  Lovely fresh acidity supports a fine structure with cherry, savoury fruit at the core.  Balanced to perfection, classy food wine. 92 points Philip White

King River Estate Sangiovese 2006 - King Valley, Vic
This Sangiovese (like the Barbera) is helping build the reputation of the King Valley as a centre of excellence for Italian varieties.  Chianti lovers will recognise the fresh red fruit savoury flavours which are complimented with a slight mint.  This latter touch is an expression of the King River terroir and lifts this wine to a higher plane.  Gorgeous food wine. Halliday 90 points.
