As far as Rhone goes, Vacqueyras is a rising star offering excellent value.
NEW Sep 2009. “Vacqueyras earned its own appellation in 1990 and, although generally more restrained than Gigondas, it can also offer the spice and herbs of the southern Rhone at a fair price.” Jancis Robinson, The World Atlas of Wine. Domaine Le Colombier is over 100 years old with the Mourre Family acquiring the 28 hectare estate in 1963. The vineyards are old and low yielding. Tradition Rouge consists of 30 year old vines, 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre. This is a beautiful fruit driven wine. Their top wine is the “Cuvee G”, a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Grenache. It is more powerful enjoying 12 months French oak aging – adding a fine structure.
Domaine Le Colombier Tradition Rouge 2007 - Vacqueyras, Rhone, France
This wine is all about the immaculate fruit - no oak at all. Medium to light bodied, but with intense fruit and spice. Very hard to have just one glass. Perfect balance - delicious.
Domaine Le Colombier Cuvee G Rouge 2007 - Vacqueyras, Rhone, France
50% Syrah (Shiraz), 50% Grenache from 50 y.o. vines - 12 mths barrel age. Displays a dense ruby/purple color and a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and cassis, along with licorice, graphite, and Provencal herbs. Seductive, full-bodied, and exhibiting some toasty vanilla notes that are not dominant or intrusive, this is a beauty to drink over the next 5-6 years.
